Dynamic & prosperous Flanders...
Lying beside the North Sea and home to the historic cities of Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels and Ghent, Flanders is the name for the northern, Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. It is the most dynamic and prosperous region in the country and offers a beautiful coastline, a great gastronomic tradition and a wealth of artistic and cultural treasures.
The Flanders’ capital is also the capital of Belgium and of the European Union and is an ideal place to start your exploration of the region. Boasting Europe’s most beautiful square, the Grand Place, it is a city of stylish shopping streets, excellent seafood restaurants and incomparable beer. The city of Bruges is Europe’s best-preserved medieval city. Known as "The Venice of the North," it has two medieval cores and some of the country’s most impressive art collections. Head inland to the port city of Antwerp, birthplace of the artist Rubens. With its fabulous art and architectural heritage and the world’s largest diamond industry, a trip here is well worth your while. Ghent was once the largest town in western Europe and you’ll find ample evidence of this former glory. It is paradise for the idle ambler with numerous museums, beautiful squares, luxurious cafés and fascinating architecture.
Head for the North Sea coast and sun yourself on the fine sandy beaches. Enjoy a refreshing swim, stroll in the sheltered dunes, take in the fresh sea air. There are fifteen seaside resorts dotted along the coast. Head inland to the cool forests and the hills of the Flemish Ardennes. Rent a bicycle and explore the area at your own pace. The Flanders region is awash with exhibitions, music festivals, concerts, fairs and festivals. Check out the local press when you get there and enter into the spirit of this lively region!
